I had an amazing week. Seriously.
I’ve never had a week like this. In my life, this one’s going down as important!
I started putting my resume out on the street about a month ago after being a wife for a season in my life. I received a request for a phone interview. We had a nice conversation and evidently, they liked it. The next step was an in person interview. My husband coached me, “Janine, just be yourself and look for your fit. If this isn’t it, we’ll keep looking until we find it. God will be faithful to us.”
The day of the interview I was just confident and myself. They asked what my favorite restaurant was and I replied, “Well, it depends on what kind of food you like. My husband and I just ate our way through Charleston, SC – we’re foodies.”
They loved me. I was shocked!
The managing partner called me the next day and said, “What do I need to do so that you will come work for me?” I almost dropped the phone.
“Well, I need to make this much a year.” (I picked a good number that I thought would turn him off.) “We can do that!” He said.
“I’m a bit quirky about driving in snow. I know that I live in Colorado, but I really don’t like driving in it.” I said – certain that this would scare him off. “Janine, if you ever feel like you don’t want to drive in the weather, just let me know and we’ll work around it. What’s next on your list?!” He asked.
“Now that you mention it, I like to travel with my husband and take extended weekends. Is it hard to get time off?” I asked. “Janine, we give you vacation time so that you’ll take it. I have no problem with extended weekends.” We continued talking a bit and he let me know that HR will be contacting me in a couple days with the official offer.
Russ and I talked about it and thought that this might be a good idea in order to put some money away for a season.
Then the phone rang. “Mrs. Emrick? This is Jen from HR and we’d like to offer you yada yada a year as well as include an extra week of vacation time for you to use as snow time when you need it.” I almost fell fainted. “Uhm…” I said, still in disbelief. Honestly, you want to think that you’ll form words that sound intelligent when God absolutely changes your world – but you can’t. All that will come out is – “Uhm”.
Jen went on to outline the benefits – insurance, 401k and the list went on and on. I stood there in the kitchen listening and in shock. “Mrs. Emrick…..Mrs. Emrick….” “Yes, Jen!” “Will that offer be satisfactory to you?” “Absolutely, Jen. That will be great.” I replied.
Russ and I walked around the house in shock of what God did for us. Russ kept saying, “No one goes on two job interviews and gets a job – much less in this economy and having been out of work for 9 months! When God moves, He just moves!” We walked around for a few days in a fog. (A good fog!)
This was my first week on the job. I’ve never been in a place where I totally fit before. This is exactly that place! I work with 26 very intelligent people who work hard and have several degrees on their walls. The office talk is of buildings, waterways, exhaust plans and surveying land – none of which I understand yet. But I am happy!
I can’t hardly talk about how good God is to us through this job without getting teary eyed and covered in a wave of gratefulness!
“I need you to be the frosting on the cake, Janine. All of us are good at being cake, but what we need is frosting.” He said.
My name is Janine and I’ve been hired to be frosting.
I can’t even believe it!
