Rising Strong
I’m reading Rising Strong by Brene Brown. It’s a great follow up to her previous work – Daring Greatly. You need to read them both. I was reading today and Brene formulated a concept that I had not put together before.
Brene talks about an interaction with her husband that she knew was going to escalate into a familiar fight. She writes:
I said, “I feel like you’re blowing me off and the story that I’m making up is either that you looked over to me while I was swimming and thought, Man, she’s getting old. She can’t even swim freestyle anymore. Or you saw me and thought, She sure doesn’t rock a Speedo like she did twenty-five years ago.”
Did you catch it…”the story I’m making up”
It slapped me. Women – we do that! Seriously. We do! We have entire conversations in our heads before a word is spoken. We rehearse drama before there ever is any. Some of us even create drama if we’ve not had some for a while.
Men – you do it just as much as women do…the drama just manifests itself differently in your lives.
We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5
The enemy of our souls works in drama – that’s why the battlefield of our life is truly the mind.
I’m going to incorporate this phrase into my life – “The story I’m making up” because it’s just so powerful and straightforward! It has helped me capture rebellious thoughts – teaching them to obey Christ…taking them to the cross!
